Are you eating 3 A DAY at work?

June 5th, 2009

As a nation of workaholics, we spend 60% of our waking hours at work. That's a lot of hours! Not only do we spend a lot of time at work, but we tend to neglect our health whilst working, snacking on high sugar, high calorie, quick energy releasing foods such as biscuits, crisps and chocolate to keep us going. If our daily recommended target is to consume 5 portions of fruit and veg, we need to cut out the unhealthy snacks and instead eat 3 A DAY AT WORK.

To help improve the health our nation's workforce, we have launched a ‘3 A DAY AT WORK ‘campaign. Ask your employer to provide free fruit at work, that way everyone is more tempted to reach for a banana, apple or a handful of grapes than something high in fat and full of calories from the vending machine.

Apart from being lower in calories than the usual office snack, the benefits of eating more fruit at work impact positively on business performance.

  • A study carried out by health and wellbeing consultancy vielife proved that a healthy employee is up to 20% more productive than an unhealthy employee. Healthy employees therefore equal a healthy bottom line.
  • In addition, employees who look after their weight report less sickness absence than those classed as obese which means lower costs associated with illness and absence from work.
  • Lastly, fruit is high in natural sugars which stimulate the brain allowing us to think faster and recall information more quickly which means no more afternoon energy slumps and fuzzy brains.
