Fruit in your box

January 26th, 2009

Apples are a highly nutritious and cleansing fruit. They are a natural mouth freshener, a good source of vitamins A and B1 and rich in a number of minerals including potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol. They are the richest source of pectin (a natural fibre) among all the fruits and are also high in antioxidants. Did you know that there are approximately 7500 different varieties of apple worldwide? You will find 2 or 3 of the below varieties in your box each week.

Braeburns
Red/orange vertical streaky appearance on a yellow/green background. Braeburns are firm, crispy, juicy and have a unique sweet/tart flavour.

Granny Smiths
Green, crisp and tart in taste and an excellent keeper. They tend to have a harder texture than other green apples and are favoured for salads because the slices do not brown as quickly as other varieties.

Royal Gala
Pale red flushes over a yellow skin. Gala apples are fairly resistant to bruising and are sweet, grainy, with a mild flavor and a thinner skin than most apples. They are also considered to be a very soft eating apple.

Red Chiefs
A variety of red delicious apple. Deep rich red in colour, sweet and juicy in taste.
